HISTORIC JOPLING HOUSE UNITS AVAILABLE FOR NEW OCCUPANTS

Created 7th March 2022

The iconic Jopling House, Sunderland, famous since 1955 as Joplings Department Store, has recently come to market with Bradley Hall Chartered Surveyors and Estate Agents as a collection of five commercial units.

Joplings Department Store was established in 1804 by James Jopling and Joseph Tuer, the department store served many, and was known as the ‘Harrods of Sunderland’ until its closure in 2010.

Since then, this prime city centre location has been converted into several units including a basement space in order to bring a new assortment of business and opportunity to the area.

Located on John Street in the heart of Sunderland City Centre, with great access to Sunderland rail and Metro stations, as well as the Bridges indoor shopping mall, Jopling House comprises of four available ground floor commercial units, ranging in size, in addition to a large basement unit with fully let student accommodation situated above.

Helen Wall, senior surveyor at Bradley Hall’s Sunderland office said: “I am delighted to have such an infamous commercial building available to let from Bradley Hall’s Sunderland operation and am sure that the units will be in high demand.

“Being from Sunderland myself and being able to see the Joplings Department Store be transformed into units such as these brings me great excitement for this corner of Sunderland.

“Each of the units are ready for tenant fitout, which will only encourage further opportunity for business growth in the area.

“In recent years, Sunderland has experienced a great deal of economic growth and development, from the likes of £26m Sunderland train station regeneration through Sunderland City Council, to £80m new leisure developments through Riverside Sunderland. Sunderland is changing and units such as these will be in high demand sooner rather than later.”

Sharon Appleby, chief executive at Sunderland BID said: “These units are in a prime location. The city centre is undergoing massive investment and transformation and the interest in the city from businesses, investors and residents is very strong.
“The historic Sunniside quarter is quite unique, and Jopling’s House is right at the heart of it. It’s a very exciting time and this opportunity is a great one for those looking to get involved with a dynamic and vibrant city centre.”

Jopling House comprises a substantial five storey building occupying a prominent corner position within Sunderland city centre. The units may be suitable for a variety of uses, subject to obtaining change of use.
