GREEN LIGHT FOR CITY CENTRE APARTMENT PROPOSALS

Created 25th August 2022

Plans to convert former redundant retail storage space into 13 apartments in Sunderland city centre have been green lit by city planners.

The development at 59 Fawcett Street – which was formerly home to the PerfectHome store – will see the existing upper floors transformed into 10 apartments, with three more apartments housed within a new third-floor extension proposed for the building.

The current owners have held the property for several years and are ready to breathe new life into the building, which lies in close proximity to the new Sunderland Railway Station. The property is currently marketed by leading commercial and residential property expert, Bradley Hall, the project was unanimously backed by councillors at a planning meeting at City Hall on Monday, June 13.

Work on the ground floor will see a small entrance created for the residential units, however the proposals approved outline that the bulk of the floorspace at ground level will remain retail space, in addition to further accommodation within the basement also being brought into use.

Helen Wall, senior surveyor at Bradley Hall’s Sunderland office, said: “The redevelopment of 59 Fawcett Street will provide a major boost to the city’s high street. The property is situated in a prime location next to the new £26million Sunderland Railway Station, close to the Metro Rail link affording convenient access to the City Hospital, Newcastle upon Tyne, the Airport and beyond.”

“The redevelopment of the ground floor in particular will further strengthen the city centre’s retail offering and the development of the new apartments will help the City Council achieve its ambitious plans of doubling the city centre population over the next decade.”

“It’s been great working with the current owners who have several other properties within the City centre which are fully let. These provide much needed residential accommodation of the highest quality, with sustainability also considered and cater to professionals within Sunderland City centre.”

The property is available for sale with the benefit of planning permission. Interested parties to contact Helen Wall at Bradley Hall Sunderland on helen.wall@bradleyhall.co.uk or 0191 5634242.
